As we send 2021 on out and, fingers cross, welcome a good new year, I just wanted to drop a peaceful moment your way. I recorded the attached minute of sound seven years ago in my backyard. It was a tiny yard in Anchorage’s South Addition neighborhood. In the middle of that year, a tree climbed up up up. That tree’s roots liked to trip me. I swear I could hear the tree giggle when I tumbled. But that’s ok. Because the tree was a perch for thousands of birds that passed through each summer. I recorded some of their calls and songs one day. The sounds always calm me. I figured you might enjoy it too. More sounds next year…and, yes, the podcast will finally launch too. I’ll post that date when I really know it, not when I think I know it.
Thanks for joining me Here in Alaska this year. I look forward to sharing more of this fascinating, maddening, beautiful place with you throughout 2022. Next year will feature original reporting, interviews, essays, and photos, and I’ll introduce you to more artists and musicians and all sorts of other people that make Alaska what it is. (More dogs of the week, too.)
